National Science Center (NSC) in the ministry of Education Science Vocational Training and Early Education is mandated with upgrading the teaching Science, Mathematics and Technology (SMT) subjects. Formal activities in the design, development and production of teaching and learning aids and materials at the NSC commenced in 1991.

MANAGEMENT STRUCTURE

NSC is a unit in the Directorate of Education and Specialized services. The NSC is managed and ministered by the principal Education officer, who reports to the chief Education officer, specialized services, who reports to the Director, Education and Specialized services. The Director, ESS reports to the permanent Secretary, Education.

NSC Administration section is responsible for procument, finances, management and day to day running of the center. The technical and production section is responsible for designing, developing and producing the teaching and learning aids whilst the science education and training section is responsible for approving prototypes and deciding the since apparatus and laboratory ware for use in schools and training of teachers in the use of NSC products to upgrade teacher skills and competencies.

There are two satellite science centers.

MISSION STATEMENT

Enhance the teaching of SMT subjects in schools, colleges through the design, development and production of mobile science laboratories and other low-cost teaching and learning aids/materials and in-service training of teachers.

OBJECTIVES

  • To identify appropriate science and technology requisites for production of SMT kits to enhance the teaching and learning of science, mathematics and technology
  • To design,develop,produce and market SMT teaching and learning materials in order to promote and upgrade the teaching and learning of these subjects.
  • To organize in-service training of teachers and teacher trainers in the use of materials in SMT subjects to upgrade their skills and competencies.


  • To promote SMT professional and subject associations to enhance professionalism among science, mathematics and technology teachers.

  • To coordinate the production of supplementary teaching and learning and study materials to improve teaching and learning of science, mathematics and technology
  • To provide library and internet services and facilities in order to ensure availability of reference materials to both teachers and pupils

To effectively monitor and evaluate all NSC activities.
