Minister of Education Hon. Dora Siliya announced to the whole nation that the Ministry of Education has now completed processing the 2009 Grade 7
examination results and selection for grade 8 for the year 2010 intake. In her announcement the following should be noted:
NUMBER OF CANDIDATES: In 2009, 340,379 candidates (183,870 boys and 156,509 girls) entered for the examination compared to 332,279 candidates in 2008. This represents a total increase of 2.43%. A total number of 307,191 (166,730 boys and 140,461 girls) sat the examination in 2009, compared to 301,427 in 2008. This represents an increase of 1.91%. NUMBER SELECTED: A total number of 219,581 (111,407 boys and 108,147 girls) were selected to grade eight, giving a progression rate of 71.48% (66.82% boys and 77.01% girls) compared to 65.44 % in 2008. All the candidates who sat the Grade 7 examination in North Western and Luapula Provinces and all the girls in Western Province have been selected into Grade 8. A total number of 228 (129 boys and 99 girls) with special Education Needs were selected into Grade 8 from a total of 250 candidates (140 boys and 112 girls) who entered the examination. EXAMINATION MALPRACTICE One case was recorded of examination malpractice involving the theft of Examination papers at Mushenteke Basic School in Kawambwa District, Luapula Province.
ABSENTEES:
Out of 340,509 (183,870 boys and 156,509 girls) candidates entered for the examination 33,188 candidates (17,140 boys 16,048 girls.) were absent from the examination, giving absenteeism rate as 9.75%. In 2008, 30,852 candidates were absent from the examination and the absenteeism rate was 9.28%. There is an increase in the number of absentees in 2009. RELEASE OF THE RESULTS: Members of the public should obtain the results from the school where pupils wrote their examinations. No results will be given from the Ministry of Education Headquarters or the Examination Council of Zambia. OPENING DATES: Grade 8 classes, like the rest of the classes, will open on Monday 11th January 2010. Grace period will end on Monday 26ndJanuary 2010. Pupils who fail to report at their respective schools by the end of the grace period will loose their places.
