GRADE 9 EXAMINATION RESULTS FOR 2009 ANNOUNCED | Print |

In his announcement the following features are to be noted:

 

a) Number of Candidates:
In 2009, 270,360 candidates (141,521 boys and 128,839 girls) entered for the examinations compared to 254,032 (134,101 boys and 119,931 girls) in 2008.  This is an increase of 6.42% on the number entered in 2009.

b) Number Selected:
The total number of candidates who sat the examination in 2009 was 247,247 (130,224 boys and 117,023 girls). Out of this number, 128,467 candidates (72,445 boys and 56,022 girls) obtained full certificates giving a pass rate of 51.96% (55.63% boys and 47.87% girls) compared to 48.57% in 2008

A total number of 113,241 candidates (61,320 boys and 51,921 girls) have been selected to Grade ten, giving a progression rate of 45.80% (47.09% boys and 44.37% girls) compared to 39.80% in 2008.

A notable feature of this year’s results is that all the candidates who obtained full Grade 9 Certificates in Northern, Luapula, North western and Central Provinces have been selected into Grade 10.  In Western Province all the female candidates who obtained full certificates have been selected into Grade 10.

 

The Performance percentages by Provinces were as follows:
• Northern Province had a total of 23,532 candidates (13,670 boys and 9,862 girls) who sat the examination; out of this number, 10,222 candidates (6,549 boys and 3,673 girls) obtained full certificates giving a pass rate of 43.44% compared to 46.22% in 2008.  All the candidates with full certificate have been selected to grade 10
• Luapula Province had 15,638 candidates (8,983 boys and 6,655 girls) who sat the examination; out of this number, 7,310 candidates (4,618 boys and 2,692 girls) obtained full certificates, giving a pass rate of 46.75% compared to 51,48% in 2008. All the candidates with full certificate have been selected to grade 10.
• Southern Province had 30,282 candidates (16,316 boys and 13,966 girls) who sat the examination, out this number, 14,465 candidates (8,216 boys and 6,249 girls) obtained full certificates, giving a pass rate of 44.74% compared to 49.85%. in 2008
• Eastern Province had 21,861(12,467 boys and 9,394 girls) candidates who sat the examination, out of this number, 10.506 candidates (6,691 boys and 3,815 girls) obtained full certificates, giving a pass rate of 48.06% compared to 47.80% in 2008.  All the girls will full certificate have been selected.
• Copper belt Province had 56,867 candidates (27,712 boys and 29,155 girls) sat the examination. Out of this number 33,662 (17,141 boys and 16,521 girls) obtained full certificates giving a pass rate of 59.19% compared to 46.04% in 2008.
• North Western Province had 13,527 candidates (7,948 boys and 5,579 girls) who sat the examination. Out of this number 7,357 candidates (4,488 boys and 2,869 girls) obtained full certificates, giving a pass rate of 51.42% compared to 50.71% in 2008. All the candidates with full certificate have been selected to grade 10.
• Central Province had 24,789 candidates (12,904 boys and 11,885 girls) who sat the examination. Out of this number of 14,475 candidates (7,994 boys and 6,481 girls) obtained full certificates, giving a pass rate of 54.53% compared to 52.46% in 2008. All the candidates with full certificate have been selected to grade 10
• Western Province   had a total of 13,386 candidates (7,385 boys and 6,001 girls) who sat the examination.  7,125 candidates (4,017 boys and 3,108 girls) obtained full certificate, giving a pass rate of 53.23% compared to 48.81% in 2008. All the female candidates with full certificate have been selected to grade 10.
• Lusaka Province had 47,365 candidates (22,839 boys and 24,526 girls) who sat the examination.  Those who obtained full certificates were 23,345 (12,731 boys 10,614 girls) giving a pass rate of 49.29% compared to 48.55% in 2008.

c) Absentee
Out of 270,360 candidates (141,521 boys and 128,839 girls) candidates who entered for examinations, 23,113 candidates were absent from the examinations compared 25,925 in 2008.  Of these, 11,297 were boys while 11,816 were girls. Luapula Province had the lowest rate of absenteeism at 7.34% (6.57% boys and 8.35% girls).  North western province had the highest absenteeism rate at 11.36% (11.05% boys and 11.79% girls) followed by Central Province at 10.42% (9.42% boys and 11.15% girls).

Overall, there was a decrease in absenteeism which was at to 8.55% in 2009.  In 2008, absenteeism was at 10.21%.  The causes of absenteeism include economic reasons; deaths of parents and guardians, early marriages, pregnancies.

In order to curb absenteeism, the Ministry of Education has put in place a number of strategies in place such as school bursaries given to venerable school going children and School Feeding Programmes in some schools.    In addition, the ministry has strengthen Guidance and Counseling in schools to give guidance to school going pupils.

d) Malpractices:

In the 2009, 62 Candidates were involved in examination malpractice Examinations.  The natures of Malpractices were largely related to smuggling of materials in the examination rooms by the candidates and some were assisted by teachers in the examinations rooms.  The stringent measures the Ministry has adopted to curb malpractices has reduced the number of candidates involved.  Schools were closely monitored during the examinations period by Standards Officers at all levels, Officers from the Examinations Council of Zambia as well as officers from the Security wings of Government.

e) Special Education Needs
Out of   196 candidates (120 boys and 76 girls) with Special Education Needs who sat the examination, 188 candidates (121 boys and 67 girls) have been selected to Grade 10.
f) Release of the Results:
Members of the public will be expected to obtain the results from the schools where pupils wrote their Examination.  No results will be given from the Ministry of Education, Headquarters or the Examinations Council of Zambia.

g) Opening Dates:

Grade 10 classes will open on Monday 8th February 2010.  Grace period ends on Friday, 19th February 2010.  Pupils who fail to report at their respective schools by the end of the Grace period will lose their places.
