Minister of Energy Makozo Chikote is in London representing Zambia at the high-level Summit on the Future of Energy Security. The two-day event is convened by the United Kingdom and the International Energy Agency (IEA).
The summit, which opened yesterday, brings together global leaders to chart a collaborative path in strengthening energy security amid transformative developments in the sector.
With the energy landscape evolving due to digitalisation, climate imperatives, and the rise of renewables, the summit provides a platform for countries to align strategies on sustainable, resilient, and secure energy systems.
It has drawn participation from ministers, investors, policy experts, and energy stakeholders worldwide.
The Minister is expected to advocate for Zambia’s energy reforms and attract investment into the sector. The Zambian delegation is also participating in key engagements, including a strategic roundtable breakfast with the UK Foreign Secretary and the UK Secretary of State for Energy Security and Net Zero.
Yesterday, the Minister held bilateral talks with the Head of the UK International Energy Unit, focusing on Zambia’s potential entry into the Global Clean Energy Alliance (GCEA). The GCEA, launched at the 2024 G20 Leaders’ Summit in Rio de Janeiro, is a UK-led initiative aimed at accelerating the clean energy transition by fostering partnerships between developed and developing countries.
The summit comes amid growing urgency for countries to enhance energy resilience and adapt to shifts in global energy deployment. According to the IEA, more than 80% of the recent global increase in electricity generation stems from renewables and nuclear energy, with clean energy investment hitting nearly $2 trillion last year alone.
As electricity demand continues to rise twice as fast as overall energy consumption. Zambia’s engagement at the summit underscores the country’s dedication to securing a cleaner and more secure energy future. This is according to a Press Statement by the First Secretary Press at the Zambian High Commission in London, Speedwell Mupuchi.
