ZAMBIA SUGAR’S POWER EXPANSION TARGETS 100MW

Zambia’s energy sector continues to post encouraging signs of growth, with Zambia Sugar Limited announcing plans to expand its power generation capacity to 100 megawatts, underscoring rising confidence in private sector–driven energy development.
The announcement was made at the 4th Public Private Dialogue Forum (PPDF) in Lusaka.
Zambia Sugar Managing Director Oswald Magwenzi said the company remains firmly anchored in the vision of private sector led growth as a pathway to sustainable national development.
Mr Magwenzi said Zambia Sugar’s investment programme demonstrates the significant role the private sector can play in strengthening Zambia’s economy while contributing to critical sectors such as energy and agriculture.
He disclosed that the company is currently implementing projects valued at US$132 million, reflecting sustained confidence in Zambia’s economic outlook and policy environment.
Zambia Sugar has continued to gain international recognition for its operational efficiency.
Mr Magwenzi said the company has installed an US$18 million falling film evaporator.
In addition, ongoing agricultural projects worth more than US$23 million, focused on efficient irrigation technologies, are already yielding positive results, while a further US$75 million is being invested in the construction of the Twazabuka warehouse and customer service facility.
Zambia Sugar has received authorization from the Energy Regulation Board (ERB) to increase its electricity generation capacity from the current 40 megawatts to 53 megawatts in the first phase, with a clear pathway toward the targeted 100 megawatts.
The expanded capacity is expected to generate surplus power for supply to the national grid, supporting energy security, industrial productivity, and economic resilience.
The development reflects growing alignment between private sector investment and Zambia’s evolving energy landscape, reinforcing optimism that increased power generation by industry players will play a vital role in driving sustainable growth and long-term economic transformation.
